Reflecting on my journey from a hopeful student to an active community leader, I can’t help but think of the transformative role the Watipa Scholarship has played in my life. Before receiving this scholarship, my ambitions felt distant, overshadowed by the challenges of accessing quality education and resources. However, the support I received through Watipa opened doors I never thought possible, propelling me into a world where I could not only dream but also act.
The Work I Do Now
Currently, I serve as a Nutrition Field Facilitator with the Farmers Union of Malawi, where my role is pivotal in planning, coordinating, and providing technical assistance to Care Groups as they implement health and nutrition interventions. I collaborate closely with Area Nutrition Coordinating Committees (ANCCs) and Village Nutrition Coordinating Committees (VNCCs) to ensure effective training facilitation and orientation during various community sessions, including Care Groups and Cluster Leaders.
My daily responsibilities involve supervising the work of care group promoters and cluster leaders, ensuring that our health and nutrition education interventions meet quality standards through regular monitoring. I actively participate in community health campaigns, such as immunization drives and vitamin A distribution, working alongside ANCCs and VNCCs to promote better health practices. I also assist in developing bi-weekly, monthly, and quarterly activity plans for Care Groups, ensuring that all necessary job aids are available for their work. By compiling and analyzing progress reports from Care Groups, I facilitate timely submissions to the District Nutrition Officer, helping to keep our initiatives on track.
This role is more than just a job; it’s a calling that allows me to empower local leaders and foster community engagement. Witnessing families adopt healthier eating habits and local farmers implement sustainable practices fills me with pride. Each smile and small victory we celebrate together serves as a reminder of my own journey from uncertainty to purpose. I strive to be a beacon of hope for others, committed to uplifting our communities through collective action and shared knowledge.

Then vs. Now: A Personal Reflection
Before the Watipa Scholarship, I was a passionate but uncertain young woman, eager to make a difference but lacking the resources and networks to do so. I remember attending workshops and community meetings, feeling like an outsider who had much to say but little opportunity to be heard. The scholarship provided me with not only financial support but also mentorship and a community of like-minded individuals who encouraged me to pursue my goals.
Now, I am a confident leader, having served as the Deputy Speaker of the Fourth Commonwealth Youth Parliament Association and the Speaker of the Youth Parliament of Malawi. These roles have equipped me with invaluable skills in policy advocacy and leadership, allowing me to amplify the voices of my peers and ensure that youth issues are prioritized in national discourse. The transformation I have undergone is a testament to the power of support and education, and I am committed to paying it forward.
Reflections on the Watipa AGM
Attending the recent Watipa Annual General Meeting (AGM) was a profound experience for me. It was a gathering of minds and hearts, where we shared our journeys, celebrated our achievements, and discussed the challenges ahead. The connections I made during this event reignited my passion for community engagement and reminded me of the strength we possess when we come together.
The AGM was not just a meeting; it was a platform for collaboration and innovation. I was inspired by the stories of fellow alumni who have ventured into various fields, each contributing uniquely to our communities. It reinforced my belief in the importance of mentorship and the shared responsibility we have to uplift one another.
Looking ahead, I hope to see the Watipa community continue to grow and thrive. I envision more collaborative projects that harness our collective strengths to tackle pressing issues in our society. Together, we can create a ripple effect of change, empowering the next generation of leaders to rise and make their mark.
In conclusion, my journey from a hopeful student to a community leader has been profoundly shaped by the Watipa Scholarship. I am grateful for the opportunities it has provided and am committed to using my experiences to inspire and uplift others. Together, we can build a brighter future for our communities.
