Amos graduated from the Technical University of Mombasa, Kenya, with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (Honors) in 2019. He began receiving support from Watipa in the third year of his degree, and shortly afterwards became a member of Watipa’s Board of Trustees.
“I work with a Christian engineering NGO that provides safe water, sanitation and hygiene solutions to rural communities and areas struck by disasters. I am an engineer and currently based in Kakuma, Turkana County, in the Northern part of Kenya. I started working with this NGO in September of 2021 and have so far designed and implemented safe water systems serving more than twenty thousand (20,000) people in communities scattered across Kenya. Currently, I am designing a water system that will serve more than twenty-five thousand (25,000) refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. It is immensely fulfilling to see such significant numbers of people being impacted by the solutions I have developed, thanks to Watipa.
Life before the scholarship was quite difficult for me. I had once contemplated dropping out of the university to look for money for tuition fees and for my subsistence. Mind you, the government then had subsidized the cost of our tuition fees but still it was impossible for my studies to go on smoothly. My life turned around when I got the scholarship. I got back to my feet and focused more on studies. Watipa catered for my tuition fees as well as for my subsistence. Consequently, my grades and overall wellbeing improved. Moving forward, three years after my graduation I got a job with the NGO where I have served diligently to ensure that people get safe water.
The just concluded AGM was such an impactful event for me. It was great to finally meet the many scholars who I have been representing on the Board of Trustees. I got to hear of the accomplishments we are all making and got the chance to encourage students under the scholarship. The AGM also rekindled a desire to donate funds to Watipa and for other charitable courses.
Meeting the Watipa team again in person has made me gain faith in humanity. They are down-to-earth individuals, and their lives are a true testament of how impactful simple acts of kindness can be in people’s lives.” – Amos Mwamlamba (Watipa Alumnus)
