Person-centred, inclusive healthcare: Moments of Choice

What is the Moments of Choice Project?
The Moments of Choice project is a community-led research initiative enabling a more inclusive, person-centred care of marginalised and diverse communities of Gumbaynggirr Country, in regional NSW. This project will be working with a broad group of diverse communities such as First Nations Peoples, refugee and migrant communities, women and those living with HIV.

With more than 3000 refugees calling Coffs Harbour home, and close to 7% of the population identifying as Indigenous (double the national average), amplifying the voices of diverse communities in the Gumbaynggirr region is paramount.

The central purposes of the Moments of Choice project are to address the stigma and discrimination diverse communities may face in a healthcare setting, improving relationships between healthcare providers and communities and to provide evidence-based resources and recommendations that strengthen and support healthcare workers’ capacity for improving dignified, equitable, inclusive healthcare.

This is achieved through creative storytelling and evidence-based approaches. Throughout, community engagement will be at the forefront of the process and oversee community-led artistic production of training materials and educational resources.

Moments of Choice will develop and amplify stories to strengthen human voices in medical education – voices that are not often heard, and connect those lived realities with efforts to improve healthcare policy and practice.
